COMMUNITY SUPPORTIVE COMMITTEE FOR RESIDENTIAL FACILITY –GORAKANA
A community supportive committee was formed for the Residential facility for the Mental patients at Gorakana Centre to maintain links with the Community, for the improvement of quality of life of those patients.This community supportive committee comprises Chief Medical Officer of Health Panadura, O.I.C. Police Station Keselwatta, Grama Niladhari of the area, and the informal Community Leaders of the area.

The inaugural meeting of this committee was held at the Gorakana Resource Centre, on 15th May 2010. Professor Nalaka Mendis delivered the welcome speech and explained the Mental Health problems in Sri Lanka, a video presentation was made on the introduction and the services rendered by Sahanaya, in Community Mental Health Care. They suggested certain activities they themselves can perform for the benefit of the residential patients.
The suggestions made were,
- Make arrangements for students in higher Classes in Schools to have entertainment programmes with the clients ( Music , drama etc.)
- Possibility of obtaining assistance from philanthrophists.
- To obtain assistance from agriculture Department to provide facilities for planting of fruits and vegetables.
- To inform their friends and relations to celebrate their childrens’ birth day parties in the centre so that the clients can have an entertainment with them.
- Possibility of providing free medicines for the clients for their general illnesses.
- To provide a vehicle for the trips organised by the centre for clients.
- The Chief M. O. H. Pandura agreed to do the medical examination of clients regularly for their general illnesses, free of charge, after his duty hours.
- To arrange religious facilities for clients.
- To meet on the 22nd May 2010,to prepare a programme, and to meet on first Saturday of every Month, at 9.30 a.m. and give every possible assistance
